More Ubuntu journeying

I haven’t had an awful lot of time to spend working constructively at the PC the last few days (on that note, Joss I haven’t forgotten about you!), but my system is still running very smoothly on Ubuntu. If anyone is thinking about using it but is a bit worried they won’t have a clue what to do, just look at all these How-To’s! And that’s only a small portion of the documentation and help available.

In other news, I’m considering either switching over to Textpattern (well it does seem a fashionable thing to do amongst WordPress users lately!) or starting up a second site with it. The only problem with the latter option being I can’t decide what subject to write about on a second site. I’m not really fed up with WordPress as such, but Textpattern does seem very nice and I do like to tinker with new software.

We shall see.

Gadget of the moment

Fingerprint Reader This gadget sounds fantastic to me. It’s a fingerprint reader. It supposedly manages all of your computer/website passwords, so instead of having to remember them all it just scans your fingerprint.

There’s only one alarm bell here – Microsoft and security. The two don’t exactly fit together comfortably.

Has anyone used one of these? And if so, what’s it like? Any obvious security flaws?

I must admit it’s tempting. I’ve got so many passwords now it does become a royal pain in the proverbials to manage them all.

update

Forget it, seems it doesn’t work with Firefox. Another of those IE only things that MS are so fond of. Grrrrr. But if anyone knows of one that works with Firefox I’d be grateful to hear about it.

Did I say best gadget ever?

I may have been a little premature…

powerbook

I have now joined the ever growing hordes of Mac users with a 15.2” combo drive Powerbook.

Thanks to my husband I’ve been spoilt rotten this christmas. I’m still finding my way around, having never used a Mac before, but I seem to be doing ok so far. Nothing has exploded yet at least!

Smarty pants

I had the smart idea of putting a third OS (Fedora) onto my PC last night. It all seemed to be going ok until the install messed up somehow and left me with an unusable hdd.

After messing around for a time trying to get the damn thing to boot back into windows I gave up and just reformatted. So that’s what I spent my Saturday night doing – formatting and reinstalling. And tonight I’ll have to reinstall Mandrake too.

Well it seemed a good idea at the time!

Somehow I don’t think I’ll bother with trying to put Fedora on again…
